Burglary and theft

Burglary and theft is a where somebody takes something without permission. Burglary is when an offender enters a building or part of a building without permission and steals something from it. Most people think of it as someone going into their house without permission and stealing their property.

A burglary is when the offender enters a building or part of a building as a trespasser intending to:

  • Cause damage
  • Inflict serious injury
  • Commit theft

It doesn’t just happen in houses. Thefts from businesses, gardens, outbuildings, sheds and garages are also burglary.

How burglary and theft can affect you

We’re all different but feeling distressed, scared or angry are all perfectly normal. After a burglary you may still feel afraid and vulnerable and this can last for some time. If you have been a victim of burglary and want help, our team here in North Yorkshire can talk to you about the support that is available. We will listen, understand and guide you to the help you need.

Ann's story

Restorative Justice is a chance for a victim of crime to meet their offender. For most it's a chance to ask questions to the only person who has the answers.
