Home security and property safeguarding

Home security

Making your home less of a target for burglars should be a priority for every person, enabling you to protect your valuables and the people you care for. There are a number of ways in which you can improve the security of your home such as:

  • Fit and use window locks, particularly on windows that may be an easy target to thieves
  • Use timers for lamps within your house whilst away to give the impression that someone is at home
  • Close and lock doors whilst you are inside
  • Install a burglar alarm and activate it whilst out and about
  • Keep keys and other valuables out of sight of passers by

Property safeguarding

Most of us have property that we value greatly, whatever it is worth in financial terms. You can keep yours secure or improve the chances of getting it back if stolen, with these common sense methods:

  • Where possible, mark your valuable items (e.g. laptops, artwork).
  • Take photos and keep a description of smaller objects so they can be shared with North Yorkshire Police if stolen.
  • Microchip your dog.
  • Register your mobile phone with a service that can track it if lost or stolen.
  • If you have valuable metals, jewellery or artwork, consider increasing security with improvements such as external lighting, CCTV and anti-climb paint
  • Never leave belongings in your caravan or motorhome if they are unoccupied for a long time.
