  • Someone is controlling you or someone you know in a way that worries you
  • Someone is threatening you or someone you know
  • Someone is making you or someone you know do things you don’t want to that make you feel uncomfortable
  • Someone is forcing you or someone you know to do something you don’t think is right
  • Someone is being violent towards you or someone you know

First signs of domestic abuse

Abuse can be psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional and if any of these are going on, you or your family – or another family – may be facing domestic abuse. Victims can be of either sex and any age, ethnic origin or sexuality. Controlling and bullying behaviour includes so-called ‘honour’ violence, female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage.

Are any of these things happening to you or anyone you know?

  • Touching in a sexual way that makes you feel uncomfortable or frightened
  • Receiving sexual images by email, social media or phone (‘sexting’)
  • Being forced to watch other people have sex
  • Being forced to make or watch pornography

If any of these are going on, you or your family – or another family – may be facing sexual abuse.
