Keeping safe in public

Although North Yorkshire is one of the safest counties in England, you should always be aware of your surroundings and take personal safety seriously.

When out and about, remember these few simple steps to stay safe:

  • Keep valuables such as mobile phones, jewellery and money out of sight
  • Plan your journey home before a night out
  • When dark, stick to well-lit streets, pavements and footpaths
  • If you can, use indoor ATMs rather than on-street cash dispensers
  • Consider carrying an attack alarm
